The project at a glance
- Location: Los Angeles, CA (residential backyard)
- Before: An old, weathered wood fence — faded, worn, and starting to fail
- Fence: Charcoal-gray composite (WPC) panels in horizontal-slat style
- Gate: Matching composite pedestrian gate on a welded metal frame, with a stainless steel handle and lock
- Why composite: The look of wood with no rot, warping, or repainting — low maintenance in the SoCal sun
- Timeline: Old fence removed and new fence + gate installed in a single day
Local work: a charcoal composite (WPC) fence in a Los Angeles backyard — the clean, modern look of horizontal composite panels, installed by Apexguard Fence in a single day.
The problem: a worn-out wood fence
The homeowner's backyard was closed in by an old wood fence that had seen better days — faded, weathered, and beginning to lean and fail. Wood looks great when it's new, but in the Southern California sun it fades, dries out, and eventually rots or warps unless it's sealed every couple of years. Rather than repair and repaint it again, they wanted something they could stop worrying about.
Why composite (WPC)
We recommended composite fencing — also called WPC (wood-plastic composite). It's made from recycled wood fibers blended with plastic, so it gives you the texture and warmth of wood without the downsides: it doesn't rot, warp, splinter, or need repainting. We went with a charcoal-gray, horizontal-slat profile for a clean, modern look that hides dirt and stands up to the sun. It's a low-maintenance fence you can pressure-wash and forget about.
The matching gate
To finish the yard we built a matching composite pedestrian gate. The gate uses the same charcoal WPC panels set into a welded metal frame so it stays square and won't sag over time — a common failure point with all-wood gates. We fitted it with a stainless steel handle and lock for smooth, secure daily use. Because the gate matches the fence exactly, the whole run reads as one clean, continuous line.
What the job involved
- Removing and hauling away the old, failing wood fence.
- Setting posts in concrete footings, plumb and square, along the backyard line.
- Installing the charcoal composite (WPC) panels in a horizontal-slat profile.
- Fabricating a matching composite gate on a welded steel frame with a stainless handle and lock.
- Cleaning up the site — old fence removed and new fence + gate finished in a single day.
Composite vs. wood: the short version
Wood costs less up front but needs regular sealing and eventually rots, warps, or leans — exactly what happened here. Composite (WPC) costs more to install but is low-maintenance, fade- and moisture-resistant, and built for the Southern California climate, so it usually costs less over its lifetime and always looks tidy.
