The build: black ornamental iron pool enclosure with keypad-lock gate at an apartment community — West Covina, CA.
The project
The pool courtyard is the heart of this West Covina apartment community — every unit looks onto it. For years it was ringed by the fence apartment pools usually get: galvanized chain-link, sagging and looking like a storage yard. We replaced the whole enclosure with black ornamental iron fencing and matching pedestrian gates, wrapping the full pool deck and working the layout around the existing planters, walkways, and stair landings so the courtyard stayed usable during installation.
Access was rebuilt around a keypad-lock gate: residents punch a code, the gate self-closes and latches behind them, and management can change the code at any turnover — no keys to copy, no rekeying bills. The flat-top iron pickets meet pool-barrier rules while giving clean sightlines across the courtyard, so the pool reads as an amenity again instead of a cage.
- Location: West Covina, CA — apartment community courtyard pool
- Before: aging galvanized chain-link enclosure
- After: black ornamental iron panels + matching pedestrian gates, full deck perimeter
- Access: keypad-lock gate — coded resident entry, self-closing and self-latching

Why property managers upgrade pool fences
An apartment pool fence has one legal job — keep the barrier compliant — but it also sets the tone for the whole property. Chain-link does the minimum; ornamental iron does the minimum and raises the property. It's harder to climb than mesh, lasts decades with powder-coated steel, and photographs well in every listing. Add coded access and the two chronic headaches of apartment pools — lost keys and propped gates — both disappear: the gate locks itself, and the code changes in minutes. For inspections, the enclosure's heights, gaps, latches, and gate swings are exactly what the county checks, and we build to pass.
Ornamental iron pool fencing typically runs about $40–$100 per linear foot installed, with gates priced per opening. Ballpark a project with the online estimate, or call for an on-site walk of your property.

Project FAQ
What kind of fence is required around an apartment pool in California?
Apartment and HOA pools in California are regulated as public pools: health and building codes generally require a barrier of at least 5 feet with self-closing, self-latching gates, limited openings a child can’t pass through, and no easy footholds for climbing. On this West Covina project we built the enclosure in black ornamental iron pickets with compliant gates, and we handle the code details — heights, gaps, latch positions, and gate swing — as part of every commercial pool fence job.
Why replace a chain-link pool fence with ornamental iron?
Chain-link does the legal minimum and looks like it. Black ornamental iron meets the same barrier requirements while being harder to climb (no mesh footholds), far more durable, and dramatically better looking — which matters at an apartment community, where the pool courtyard is the center of the property and a selling point for every future tenant. It’s one of the highest-return upgrades a property manager can make.
Why put a keypad lock on a pool gate?
Apartment pool gates have to stay locked, but residents still need access — and physical keys get copied, lost, and passed around. A mechanical keypad lock gives every resident a code instead of a key, locks the gate automatically behind each use, and lets management change the code anytime, like at turnover or after unauthorized use. No wiring or batteries required.
How much does a commercial pool fence cost?
Ornamental iron pool fencing typically runs about $40 to $100 per linear foot installed depending on height, footing conditions, and gate count — keypad-lock gates are priced per opening. For apartment and HOA pools we quote from an on-site measurement and provide documentation your property file needs. The estimate is free.
