New wood privacy fence + custom steel-frame keypad gates in Claremont

A Claremont backyard gets a full refresh: dog-ear wood privacy fencing around the yard, and two custom walk gates — welded black steel frames, redwood infill, keyless keypad locks — set into the block wall.

The build: custom steel-frame wood gate with keyless keypad lock, set into the existing block wall — Claremont, CA.

The project

This Claremont home needed two different things done right. The yard needed privacy — solved with new dog-ear wood fencing: fresh posts in concrete footings, clean rails, and tight board runs that wrap the yard corners without a gap. And the two openings in the existing block wall needed gates that wouldn't sag — solved the way we prefer to build them: a welded black steel frame carrying redwood board infill, hung on heavy hinges, each fitted with a keyless mechanical keypad lock.

That steel-frame construction is the difference between a wood gate that works for a year and one that works for decades. Wood alone twists and drops out of square; a welded steel perimeter never does. The wood matches the new fence, the black frame matches the wall caps and hardware, and the keypads mean nobody's hiding a key under a rock.

Why steel-frame wood gates beat all-wood gates

Every all-wood gate eventually tells the same story: the diagonal brace loosens, the frame racks, the latch stops lining up, and the gate drags. Building the gate on a welded steel frame ends that story before it starts — the frame stays square forever, the hinges weld to steel instead of screwing into end grain, and the lock hardware bolts to metal. The wood infill does what wood does best: look warm and match the fence. It's a small upgrade in cost and a permanent upgrade in function.

Wood privacy fencing in Claremont typically runs about $25–$45 per linear foot installed, with custom steel-frame gates priced per gate. Ballpark your project with the online estimate and confirm it with a free on-site measurement.

Project FAQ

What is a steel-frame wood gate?

It's a gate built on a welded black steel frame with wood boards as the infill — on this Claremont project, redwood boards inside a powder-coated steel perimeter. The steel frame carries the weight and keeps the gate square for decades, while the wood matches the fence, so you get the warmth of wood without the sagging that all-wood gates eventually develop.

Can a wood gate have a keypad lock?

Yes. On this project we fitted each steel-frame wood gate with a keyless mechanical keypad lock — no keys to lose, no batteries to change, and the family and trusted visitors each use a code. The lock mounts solidly to the steel frame rather than to wood, so it stays tight.

How much does a wood fence cost in Claremont?

Installed wood privacy fencing in Claremont typically runs about $25 to $45 per linear foot depending on height, board style, and old-fence removal. Custom steel-frame wood gates are priced per gate based on size and hardware. We give a firm written quote after a free on-site measurement.
